I began building model kits back in the 1960's. Back then kits were available everywhere. I remember buying most of the models I built in a local corner candy store/soda fountain. The kits sold for about $1.00 or so. Those were the days! I used to enjoy building character kits, rockets, aircraft and an occasional car kit. Now as an old guy, I enjoy car kits the most. These are some photos of my most recent completions. The ice cream truck was built from a Chevy pickup kit and is about 50% scratch built. The Cadillac ambulance was built from a Ghost Busters Ecto-1 kit and is a representation of an ambulance I used to walk by on my way to the candy store in my old neighborhood.
The Mercury Cougar is a model of a real car I had when I was a teen. Accurate down to the inspection and registration stickers in the windshield.
Model building is a great hobby for kids. They learn to read and follow instructions, research designs, utilize different tools, and most of all patients.
When buying a model kit for a kid, it is important not to buy "too much kit". Buy according to the age and skill level. Select a subject that interests the child. It is a very rewarding hobby.
